Climate, soil and temperature for betel cultivation-

Generally betel cultivation in any kind of fertile soil makes it the most successful farming. Waterlogged land is not considered suitable for betel cultivation because in water logged condition, the roots of betel plants rot and die. In betel cultivation, the pH value of the selected soil should be 6 to 7. Along with this, moist climate with humidity is required for betel cultivation.

The betel plant comes under the vine crop, hence its plants grow rapidly during the rainy season, whereas the betel plant does not grow when the environment is hotter than 38-40 degrees Celsius. To cultivate betel leaf in hot areas, betel plants require a minimum temperature of 10 degrees and maximum 35 degrees.

Betel plant can grow easily in any type of fertile soil. The betel plant needs the same environment as the cardamom plant. In hotter areas, betel cultivation is also done in poly house or shade net. Under kitchen gardening, betel cultivation can also be done easily in pots.

Field preparation and fertilizer requirement-

Before planting the betel plant in the field, the selected field is prepared. For this, it is necessary to do deep plowing of the selected field. By deep ploughing, the remains of old crops are destroyed, as well as the amount of oxygen in the soil is also balanced. After ploughing, the field is left open like this for some time (about 01 week).

When the soil of the field starts appearing dry, then the soil is made friable by pushing it with the rotavator. After this, neem cake (half of the amount of manure) is added to the field along with vermi compost manure or cow dung manure to increase soil fertility.

After adding manure etc. to the loose soil, the field is leveled with a plinth/serawan. If you want to use chemical fertilizers in betel field, then you can use NPK at the time of last ploughing.

Since there is a lot of diversity in the weather of North India, for this reason barges are constructed for successful betel cultivation in North India. Long wooden sticks, bamboo, dry leaves, hemp and grass, wire etc. are required for making Bareja.

Improved varieties of betel leaf-

Since betel leaf has special importance in Indian culture, many varieties of betel leaves are cultivated commercially in India according to their size, color and taste. Which are-

  1. Bangla,
  2. Calcutta,
  3. Sofia,
  4. Banarasi,
  5. Sweet,
  6. Ramtek,
  7. Sanchi,
  8. Deshawari,
  9. Camphori and
  10. Maghai

How many basic varieties of betel leaf are there?

If we talk from scientific point of view, there are only 5 or 6 varieties of betel leaf; which are- Bangla, Deshawari, Kapuri, Meetha and Sanchi.

When should a betel plant be planted in the kitchen garden?

Rainy and spring season is considered most suitable for planting in pots or grow bags under kitchen garden. However, the betel plant requires moist, humid weather to flourish. This can also be prepared artificially.

Method of making betel plant-

In betel cultivation, grafted plants (grafts) of betel are used to get better quality crop. Only these grafted plants are transplanted in the fields as crops. Mother plant (about one year old) plants are required to prepare cuttings.

Where can one get the mother plant to make a new betel plant?

To make a new betel plant, you can easily get the mother plant from your regional plant nursery. Apart from this, you can also buy betel mother plant online.

The cutting is prepared by cutting it from the lower stem of the mother plant because germination occurs at a faster rate in the lower branch of the betel plant than normal. It is considered appropriate to plant the cuttings from the mother plant in the field.

After cutting the cuttings, these cuttings (two or three knots of vine in the ground) are buried in seedling trays and left to germinate, when new buds start sprouting from the cuttings, it should be understood that the betel plant is planted in the field. It is ready for planting.

Transplantation method and time of betel cultivation-

February to March in hot areas and May to June in humid areas are most suitable for transplanting betel plants. The environment of both the above times is favorable for betel cultivation. Evening time is considered best for successful planting of betel leaves, because the environment is almost stable in the evening, which helps in the growth of the plant.

Betel plants are planted in rows. Under poly house/farm a distance of 12 to 20 cm is maintained between each vine/plant and need to be planted at a depth of 4 to 5 cm in the ground. After planting betel vine, water is applied to the field by hazard/fountain method.

Irrigation of betel cultivation-

Betel plants require irrigation immediately after transplanting. In summer, betel plants need irrigation at an interval of two days and in winter; betel plants need irrigation at an interval of 15 to 20 days.

Apart from this, during the rainy season, plants/soil has to be watered as per requirement. Do not allow water logging in the soil during the rainy season, otherwise the roots of the betel plants will rot in the water. Due to which you may be harmed.

Weed control in betel cultivation-

Controlling weeds etc. is one of the most important steps to earn good profit from betel cultivation. Due to the presence of weeds, the growth of betel plants slows down, due to which the desired production is not possible.

To control weeds in betel cultivation, regular weeding is necessary till the crop is ready. Labor is required to control the weeds here, as hand weeding is considered the most appropriate and most correct method.

If you want weeds to flourish at least, then you should use mulching technique for this. You can also use paper or plastic sheet under mulching.

Disease and pest management-

While cultivating betel, mainly the following diseases are seen in the betel plant-

Disease nameType of diseaseTreatment
Root Diseaseroot rotSoil quality and temperature need to be treated
Leaf rot diseaseParasite fungus (brown and black spots on leaves)
Root Diseasevine root drying up
Bacterial stigmaBacterial disease (yellow spots on the leaves and the entire leaf turning black)Spraying with Streptomycin Sulphate 0.5% solution
Lettering Diseasecircular brown spotsSpraying of mixed drug of both Carbendazim and Mancozeb at 02 grams per liter

Crop harvesting-

When the betel plant becomes dense and the leaves start appearing shiny, then understand that it is time to harvest the betel leaves. At the time of harvesting, betel leaves have to be plucked along with the stalk.

Due to this, betel leaves remain fresh for a long time. After harvesting, betel leaves are sorted according to size and color and sent to the market for sale.

How is betel leaves sold in the market?

In the current market, the price of betel leaves is determined on per leaf basis.

Profit in betel cultivation-

The cost of betel cultivation in 500 square meters with the Bareja construction technique comes to about 50 to 55 thousand rupees per 03 years.

Due to which the profit of the first year can be around 65 to 70 thousand rupees, the profit of the second year can be around 70 to 80 thousand rupees and the profit of the third year can be around 50 to 57 thousand rupees. In this way, the total possible profit of 03 years can be around 1.75 lakh rupees.

Now if the total cost (175000-55000=Rs. 120000) is removed from this profit, then the gross income is Rs. 120000. Apart from this, the support of marketing can also be taken to earn huge profit.
